Cultivating A Pace That Matters

There’s an excitement when we’re running at full tilt that’s hard to replicate. It’s as if every fiber of our being is alive and tingling, as we work towards a specific goal.

Certainly there’s a sense of risk (you might even call it fear) but it’s one that pushes us to stay on our toes, alert and focused. We’re geared to execute carefully, we’re mindful of staying agile as we do so, and we’re entirely focused on results.

First Principles In Times Of Hyper Growth

There’s an adrenaline rush, a state of heightened performance, that comes with growth, when things are going well. It’s a positive state because it’s a sign that others value what we’re doing and, by definition, in increasing numbers.

All of us want that kind of growth for our enterprises (and ourselves) because it is a sign that things are working. That kind of growth motivates the organization and pushes us to believe, commit ourselves and achieve more. All good things.

Culture As Operating System

Culture, in all its forms, plays such a strong role in our lives that, for the most part, we don’t really even pay attention to it or realize it.

It’s formed through years of experience, understanding and shared experiences. This is the case at home, in our communities, with our friends and with our colleagues at work.

In fact, Trevor Noah once referred to culture as “an operating system that you have, that you didn’t even realize you had”. That captures it perfectly for me.

Judging Celebrities...And Ourselves

Our issues always come from somewhere. What I mean by that is that, there’s always a root cause or a set of incidents of some sort that drives us to behave in specific ways.

That’s not to suggest our behaviors are always justified, rather that there’s a reason behind them. Something that has happened to us, or that we’ve experienced, that’s led us to interpret that experience in a particular way, develop particular judgements (or ideas or perceptions) and then act (or react) accordingly.

Matters of Culture

One of the hardest things to get our heads around is this idea of culture, and specifically, cultural fit, in terms of people we work with.

We’re well versed in assessing technical capabilities and the “how” we do the work that we do. You need to have these specific qualifications or you need to show those particular process skills, or you need to demonstrate that you’ve delivered on that defined platform in your prior experiences. All defined, all measurable, all tangible.

The world has changed! The old order is out! Things will never go back to the way they were!

There’s no shortage of pronouncements about how the coronavirus has fundamentally changed the way we live, work and play. No more cruises, no more constant flying, no more of the large scale social gatherings that we’ve become so accustomed to. It’s (apparently) a whole new world out there.

And so it goes with Working From Home (WFH).
