I think I was 13 or 14 when my brothers excitedly came home one day with a handful of vinyls that a friend had lent them. The vinyls were singles from a couple of the biggest British heavy metal bands of the day - Iron Maiden and Saxon.
We put the Saxon single, Women in Uniform, on first followed by Iron Maiden’s now-classic track, Phantom of the Opera.
Every so often, we see it.
That guy who worked in finance, then decided to leap into the world of books and online retailing, to start a successful enterprise.
Or that gal who went into the flower business -despite having no prior industry knowledge - and created a profitable, growing business in just a couple of years.
In the novel, Siddhartha, by Herman Hesse, Siddartha, a man beset by an inner restlessness and search for enlightenment, meets Gotama Buddha. He has heard Gotama's teachings, and despite being impressed by their clarity and perfection of thought, he informs him that he, Siddartha, cannot become one of his followers, but needs to choose his own path to enlightenment.
The first concert I ever saw was David Bowie, during his Serious Moonlight Tour, on December 8th, 1983. Three plus decades may have accentuated some of the colors in my mind, but as I recall it, it's still one of the greatest shows I ever saw.
The point of protest is to create discomfort. The point of pushing our boundaries is to break things, and, yes, to break through. The point of being different is to provoke an alternate reaction.
These discomforts, breakthroughs, reactions have a purpose. They are to topple the old order, to change our minds, to drive change.
