Community Matters

If there’s one thing that social distancing has re-emphasized, it’s the power and value of social connection. That community matters - and not only does it matter but it’s, frankly, more important than it ever has been. We’re all experiencing that, regardless of whether or not we’d conceptually bought into the idea before.

In fact, I’ve been heartened by the virtual outreach that I’ve seen everywhere - from family to friends to celebrities, in real life and across social media. Despite all of the havoc that social media can and has wreaked in so many aspects of our lives, there has certainly been plenty of good and this is surely one of the prime reasons for which it was created.

What social distancing is showing us is that we’re built for connection, we’re built to help and support each other (in all sorts of ways), that we need to be there for each other. It’s funny in a sense, because as simple as it sounds (just stay home and watch Netflix!), it’s incredibly hard to practice.

I hope that as we come out of this, whenever that is, we do so with a heightened appreciation for human and physical connection. That our community matters. That we all matter. That we are, in fact, all part of the same tribe.
