In any business, you have to deal with odds on a day to day basis. Nothing is for certain, so you do the numbers, work out the scenarios and then take a call. Some of those times, things will go better than expected, some will go as expected, and other times, things will be worse than expected.

But however things end up, not taking action is NOT an option. You have to act and do.

And that’s the case right now in these weird and strange and unprecedented times that we’re grappling with in so many countries around the world. And it’s a hard one.

By the looks of the absolute numbers (in most countries), the level of response that’s being discussed seems disproportionate. It seems extreme. It seems overblown, to the extent that many worry that we’ll look back and feel we went overboard. We’re afraid of being embarrassed by a potential overreaction.

But that’s the point.

If we do what we need to do, then we will flatten the curve and our measures will look overblown. As someone on Twitter said, we have to not be afraid of looking as if we’ve overblown things. Not in extraordinary situations such as these.

Look, I get that we might be comfortable with life as normal, on the belief that most of us will be fine. The fact is that most of us will be.

But this isn’t about most of us. It’s about all of us

It’s for those who are most at risk, who won’t be fine, and who can’t afford to play the odds. We don’t get to choose for them.

So let’s not play the odds for them. Let’s get our shit together and do what we need to do.

Stay safe, folks.
